First decision: a chiller or ice?
A cold plunge is a tub of cold water. What you are really choosing is how the water gets cold and stays clean.
- Tub only, with ice. You fill it with the hose, add ice, and drain and refill it when the water needs changing. It costs the least up front and needs no power, but you do the cooling by hand before every session.
- Tub with a chiller. The chiller cools the water to the temperature you set and holds it there, and on most of these tubs it circulates the water through a filter too. The chillers that come with the SaunaLife, Finnmark, Icetubs and Kohler tubs can also heat the water, so the same tub works as a warm soak.
The SaunaLife tubs show the difference in dollars: the 1-person S1N tub on its own is $2,990, and the S1NC package with the FDC-1A chiller is $5,340.
How cold do you actually need?
Don't pay extra for the lowest number on a spec sheet. Cleveland Clinic advises against going below 40°F (4°C), suggests 50 to 59°F (10 to 15°C) for beginners, and says a session should never go past five minutes, with beginners keeping to a minute or two. Every SaunaLife, Finnmark, Icetubs and Kohler chiller on this list goes down to 39°F or lower, so any of them covers that range.
Check with your doctor first if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or poor circulation, or if you are pregnant. Cleveland Clinic lists these among the conditions to discuss with a healthcare provider before you start. If you feel lightheaded, get out of the water.
Best all-in-one for one person: Finnmark SoulCold
Who it suits: someone who wants one price that covers the tub, the chiller and the cover, with nothing to add.
The SoulCold has a 304 stainless steel shell in a cedar surround and holds 180 gallons. The inside measures 48 by 31 inches and 28 inches deep. Its chiller runs from 32.5 to 108°F, with an ozone generator, a 20-micron filter and a Wi-Fi controller you can use from your phone. It plugs into a standard outlet, comes with an insulated marine-grade vinyl cover, and ships free. It is $6,990, with a 2-year limited warranty for home use.
Best value with a chiller: SaunaLife S1NC
Who it suits: one person who wants a chiller without paying premium prices.
The S1NC package pairs SaunaLife's 124-gallon round tub with the FDC-1A chiller and heater. The chiller runs from 32.5 to 108°F, tied with the SoulCold for the widest range on this list, plus an ozone generator, a filter and a Wi-Fi app. The tub is 40 inches across and 41.3 inches high on the outside, comes with round steps, and arrives fully assembled. It is $5,340 in natural or $5,540 in black.
What it still needs: the S1 cover ($390) and delivery ($695). That brings it to $6,425, so compare it with the Finnmark SoulCold above at $6,990 with the cover and delivery included.
Best for two people: SaunaLife S2NC
Who it suits: couples, and anyone who wants room to stretch out.
The S2NC is SaunaLife's 200-gallon tub for up to 2 bathers, 66.5 by 39.1 inches and 36 inches deep inside, paired with the AP-1 chiller and heater. The AP-1 runs from 37 to 107°F, with 3.05 kW of cooling, an ozone generator and a Wi-Fi app. It arrives fully assembled. It is $7,120 in natural or $7,320 in black.
What it still needs: the S2 cover ($590) and delivery ($695). If you plan to use ice, the tub alone is $4,390 (S2N) and has 3/4-inch chiller connections built in.
Best upright barrel: Icetubs IceBarrel
Who it suits: people who want to sit upright with the water up to their shoulders, in a small footprint, indoors or out.
The IceBarrel holds 92.5 gallons, with a 26.8-inch-wide space inside and 26 inches of seating depth. Its 1 HP cooling engine runs from 37.4 to 100.4°F on 110V, with three-stage filtration, a built-in ozonator and control from the Icetubs app. The Thermo Cover and three filters are included, no plumbing is needed, and it ships free. It is $9,995, or $12,990 with stairs. For bigger frames, the IceBarrel XL holds 113.6 gallons with a 35.1-inch-wide interior, from $11,995.
Best for reclining: Icetubs IceBath
Who it suits: one person who wants to lie back rather than sit.
The IceBath has a 60% back recline and a stainless steel interior in a Thermowood surround, with the same cooling engine, filtration, app and cover as the IceBarrel. The Large is $11,495 and holds 400 liters. The X-Large, at $14,995, is made for a bather who needs more leg room. Both ship free.
Best design-led ice bath: Kohler x Remedy Place
Who it suits: buyers who want a cold plunge that looks like a piece of bathroom design, indoors or outdoors.
Kohler's Ice Bath holds 85 gallons at a water depth of 18 inches. It cools and heats from 39 to 104°F, with UV light and around-the-clock filtration, on a 120V, 20A supply. It comes with a cushioned headrest, an integrated filling hose, a 30-micron filter and an insulated cover with child locks, and it has a guided breathing light timer built in. It is $17,425, with a 2-year limited warranty for home use. Delivery is calculated at checkout.

Before you buy any cold plunge
- Plan for the weight. Water weighs about 8.3 pounds a gallon, so a 124-gallon tub holds roughly 1,000 pounds of water and a 200-gallon tub about 1,670 pounds, before anyone gets in. Set it on a level slab, pad or deck rated for that load.
- Check the power. The SaunaLife, Finnmark, Icetubs and Kohler chillers run on a 110 to 120V supply, and the manual for each one specifies the outlet and protection it needs. Have a licensed electrician confirm the circuit, especially outdoors.
- Budget for a cover. It keeps out leaves and sun and helps the chiller hold temperature. Finnmark, Icetubs and Kohler include one; SaunaLife sells it separately.
- Plan the delivery. Most tubs arrive by freight truck at the curb, so line up help to move them into place.
- Keep up the water care. Change the filters on the schedule in the manual, and drain and refill a tub without a chiller more often.
We supply the tub. Placement, the base and the wiring stay yours, with a licensed electrician for any new circuit. Call or email us about any tub on this list and we will tell you exactly what it comes with and what it still needs. Or browse every cold plunge tub and the covers and filters that go with them.
