Real prices for every kind of home sauna, from a 1-person infrared cabin to a 5-person outdoor barrel, plus the heater, delivery, electrical, base and running costs most price lists leave out.

By Plunge Into Saunas Updated 8 min read

Finnmark FD-3 infrared sauna, Canadian Timber Serenity barrel sauna and HUUM DROP heater package

The short answerA complete home sauna from our catalog starts at $4,695 for a 1-person infrared cabin that plugs into a regular outlet. A 5-person outdoor barrel with an electric heater, a gravel base and a new 240V line usually lands between $10,700 and $14,600 all in. Premium indoor cabins from Kohler and ThermaSol, with the heater included, run $15,400 to $26,400. The sauna is the biggest line, but the heater, delivery, power and base can add several thousand dollars on top, so it pays to price them before you choose.

Every price below comes from our own store as of October 1, 2026, across 79 saunas from SaunaLife, Canadian Timber, Finnmark, ThermaSol and Kohler. The installation costs come from national averages published by Angi and HomeAdvisor, and the electricity math uses the U.S. Energy Information Administration's latest residential rate. Sources are listed at the end.

Home sauna prices by type

The type of sauna sets the price more than anything else. Here is the spread across what we carry right now, using each model's starting price.

Type Models Lowest Typical (median) Highest
Infrared cabin (indoor) 3 $4,695 $5,995 $6,495
Outdoor cube 9 $3,990 $5,990 $10,990
Outdoor barrel 24 $4,390 $6,190 $12,827
Outdoor cabin and modern shapes 30 $4,990 $12,067 $75,028
Indoor traditional kit or cabin 9 $6,790 $15,413 $26,400

A few things explain the gaps:

  • Infrared cabins are the cheapest complete option because the heat source is built in and the small models run on household power. Our infrared saunas start at $4,695.
  • Barrels and cubes are the value end of outdoor saunas. The round shape keeps the inside volume small, so it heats up quickly. See all barrel saunas.
  • Cabins give you full standing room, porches and big glass, so prices climb with size and finish. The $75,028 top of the range is a fully assembled ThermaSol Ombra cabin, which is a different product from a kit you put together yourself.
  • Indoor premium cabins from Kohler and ThermaSol include the heater and controls in the price, which is part of why they start higher. The $6,790 entry point is the SaunaLife X2, a compact 1 to 2-person kit sold without a heater.

Is the heater included? Often, no

This is the line that catches most people out. Whether the heater is in the price depends on the brand:

Brand Heater in the price? What it adds
Finnmark infrared Yes, the infrared panels are the heater Nothing extra
Kohler indoor kits Yes, a FERO heater, stones and guard Nothing extra
ThermaSol cabins Yes, a Harvia Virta heater and control Nothing extra
Canadian Timber Your choice: No Heater, or an electric heater or wood stove sized to the model Electric heaters add about $1,365 to $3,427 and wood stoves about $1,425 to $2,290 over the no-heater price, depending on the model and heater; the indoor Element saunas are electric only, +$1,323 to +$1,831
SaunaLife No, sold separately Pick a heater package sized to the room

If you are buying the heater yourself, here is what they cost in our store today:

  • Electric heater, heater only: $886 to $10,441, with the middle half of our range between about $1,400 and $2,850. Many of these need a separate control panel.
  • Electric heater package (heater plus control, sometimes stones): $945 to $6,471. A "Pkg" in the name means the control is already in the box. See heater packages.
  • Wood-burning stove: $961 to $7,587 for the stove, or $1,750.50 to $7,333 as a package. Wood needs a chimney but no electrical work.
  • Sauna stones: $35 to $158 a box. Your heater's manual says how many pounds it takes.

Buying a heater that is too small is the most expensive mistake on this list, because the room never gets hot enough and you end up buying twice. Our free Heater Size Calculator works it out from your room size, glass and wall type.

Delivery: what freight adds

Saunas ship by truck, curbside, to the 48 contiguous states. The driver leaves the pallet at the end of the driveway, so plan for two people to carry the pieces in. What delivery costs depends on the brand, and the exact charge always shows at checkout before you pay:

  • Free: all Finnmark saunas, and Canadian Timber saunas on orders over $2,000.
  • $950: most SaunaLife barrels, cubes and garden saunas.
  • $1,000: ThermaSol cabins, Kohler outdoor kits and the SaunaLife CL12GCP.
  • $1,990: the fully assembled SaunaLife G6, which ships on a flatbed truck.
  • By weight: Kohler indoor kits and some accessories.
  • Heaters and stoves: many ship free, the rest between $99 and $495.

Electrical work

Power is where budgets most often go wrong, so it is worth knowing which bucket you are in before you buy.

Infrared: often just an outlet

Our 1- and 2-person Finnmark infrared saunas plug into a standard 120V, 15-amp household outlet, so there may be nothing to pay at all. The 4-person FD-3 draws 3,150 watts and needs a 240V, 15-amp outlet. Angi puts the national average for adding a 240V outlet at $220, with most jobs between $175 and $300.

Traditional electric heater: a dedicated 240V circuit

A traditional electric heater is hardwired to its own 240V circuit, sized to the heater. HUUM's U.S. installation manual, for example, lists a 30-amp breaker for its 6 kW heater, a 40-amp breaker for 7.5 kW and a 50-amp breaker for 9 kW. The wiring has to be done by a licensed electrician, and your inspector has the final say on breaker size. Our Sauna Build Guides cover the wire gauges.

  • Indoor sauna near the panel: closer to the cost of a simple 240V run.
  • Outdoor sauna: the closest published benchmark is a hot tub, which also needs a dedicated outdoor 240V line. HomeAdvisor puts that at $2,300 on average, usually $1,900 to $4,200, depending mostly on how far it is from the house. Digging the trench yourself saves about $6 per foot.
  • Panel upgrade: if your panel has no room for a 40 or 50-amp breaker, upgrading to 200-amp service runs $1,300 to $2,000 according to Angi.

Going wood-fired skips all of this. A wood stove needs no electricity, which is why a wood-heated outdoor barrel can come in thousands below the same barrel with an electric heater once the wiring is counted.

The base for an outdoor sauna

An outdoor sauna needs a level, load-bearing base that drains. The two common choices:

  • Compacted gravel pad: Angi's average for a professionally installed shed-sized gravel pad is $1,100 to $1,700, with a typical range of $800 to $2,400. It drains well and suits barrels and cubes.
  • Concrete slab: poured concrete averages $4 to $8 per square foot according to Angi, though small slabs often carry a contractor's minimum charge.

A deck rated for the loaded weight or patio stones over compacted gravel also work. Check the footprint and weight on the product page, and whether your town needs a permit before you build.

Assembly and installation

Most of the saunas we sell are kits you assemble yourself, and many SaunaLife models say DIY right in the name. Plan on a second person and check the assembly time in the manual before you book the weekend.

If you want it done for you, some brands sell installation. Kohler's indoor kits come with a "With Installation" option that adds $2,250 at every size in our store. Otherwise a local carpenter or handyman is the usual route, and the electrician is a separate trade either way.

What it costs to run

The average U.S. home paid 18.31 cents per kWh for electricity in July 2026, according to the EIA. Using that rate:

Sauna Power Per 1-hour use Per month (4 a week)
Finnmark FD-1 infrared 1.45 kW about $0.27 about $4.60
Finnmark FD-2 infrared 1.75 kW about $0.32 about $5.55
Finnmark FD-3 infrared 3.15 kW about $0.58 about $9.99
6 kW electric heater 6 kW up to $1.65* up to $28.54*
9 kW electric heater 9 kW up to $2.47* up to $42.81*

*Traditional heater figures assume an hour and a half at full power, which covers the 30 to 60 minutes a heater takes to come up to temperature plus a session. That is a ceiling, because the thermostat cycles the heater off once the room is hot. Infrared figures assume one hour at full draw. Monthly figures use 4.33 weeks. A wood stove costs whatever your firewood costs.

Three real budgets

Here is how the pieces add up for three common setups, using today's store prices and the national averages above.

1. A 1-person infrared sauna in a spare room

Finnmark FD-1 Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna $4,695
Delivery Free
Electrical (standard 120V outlet) $0
Total $4,695

2. A 5-person outdoor barrel with a wood stove

Canadian Timber Serenity 5 Person Barrel Sauna, Narvi Kuru 14 wood stove, shingle roof $7,984.50
Delivery (order over $2,000) Free
Gravel pad, professionally installed $800 to $2,400
Electrical $0
Total $8,785 to $10,385

3. The same barrel with an electric heater

Canadian Timber Serenity 5 Person Barrel Sauna, Harvia KIP 8kW electric heater, shingle roof $7,990.50
Delivery (order over $2,000) Free
Gravel pad, professionally installed $800 to $2,400
Outdoor 240V line by an electrician $1,900 to $4,200
Total $10,691 to $14,591

The two heaters cost about the same here, so the difference between budgets 2 and 3 is almost all wiring, which is the clearest way to see why the heat source is the biggest decision after the sauna itself.

Ways to bring the cost down

  • Size the heater correctly with the Heater Size Calculator so you buy once.
  • Put the sauna close to the house. Every extra foot of trench and wire is billed.
  • Consider wood heat for an outdoor sauna if you have a supply of firewood.
  • Dig the trench yourself if your electrician agrees, which HomeAdvisor estimates saves about $6 per foot.
  • Pay by wire transfer and save 3% on your order (this cannot be combined with financing).
  • Spread the cost with monthly installments through Shop Pay at checkout.
  • Build it yourself. Our Sauna Builder lets you pick every part for a custom room and see it drawn to scale before you order.
